Summary: Emotional eating (EE) is associated with
weight gain and adiposity indicators. The objective of this work was to
evaluate the relationship between EE and adiposity indicators in Community
Health Workers (CHWs) in the city of Vitória - ES. This is a cross-sectional
study with the collection of biochemical, hemodynamic, anthropometric,
sociodemographic, health and life habits data. For assessment of EE, the
Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire was used. Six adiposity indicators were
studied, namely: Body Mass Index (BMI), Waist Circumference (WC), Body Fat
Percentage (BFP), Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR), Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) and
Conicity index (C index). The EE was analyzed as a quantitative (continuous)
and qualitative variable, based on the division into quartiles, resulting
subsequently in three categories (low, moderate and high). The association
between EE and the outcome variables was analyzed using the chi-square,
Fisher's exact, Student's t, Mann-Whitney, ANOVA (Tukey's post-hoc) and
Kruskal-wallis (Dunn-Bonferroni post-hoc) tests. Spearman's test was used to
assess the correlation between quantitative variables and EE. Multivariate
linear regression models were used to verify the association between exposure
(EE categories) and outcomes (adiposity indicators). To analyze the
reliability of the EE subscale, Chronbach's α coefficient (α = 0.94) was
obtained. The level of significance adopted was 5%. Data from 222 CHWs were
analyzed, with a mean age of 46.8 ± 9.3 years, the majority of whom were
women (93.2%). Of the total, 49.5% declared themselves brown, 82% have
completed high school and 70.7% do not practice physical activity.
Statistically significant associations were found between EE and BMI (β =
2.49, IC95%: 0.60 – 4.39, p = 0.010), WC (β = 6.45, IC95%: 1.30 – 11.6,
p = 0.014), BFP (β = 3.56, IC95%: 0.54 – 6.58, p = 0.021) e WHtR (β =
0.04, IC95%: 0.01 – 0.07, p = 0.005), even after adjustment for confounding
variables. No association was observed between EE and WHR and C index. It is
concluded that there is a positive relationship between EE and four adiposity
indicators evaluated (BMI, WC, BFP and WHtR).
