Summary: Introduction: The atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) is a marker used to
assess the risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVD), and high values may also
indicate a risk for obesity. Bariatric surgery (BS) is an alternative for the
treatment of severe obesity, and in addition to inducing consistent and
lasting weight loss, it can also contribute to a reduction in risk factors
for CVD. The relationship between IAP and anthropometric parameters in
individuals undergoing CB is still poorly known. The objective of the study
was to evaluate the AIP during the follow-up of individuals undergoing BS and
its relationship with anthropometric parameters. Methods: The study was
carried out with patients from the Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Program at
the Cassiano Antônio Moraes University Hospital, who were evaluated in four
moments: before the surgery (T0), in the 2nd (T1) and 6th (T2) months after
the surgery. Anthropometric (body mass index, waist circumference, fat and
lean mass) and biochemical parameters (lipid profile, glucose and C-reactive
protein), and atherogenic index of plasma, calculated by the formula [= log
(serum triglycerides concentration/HDL cholesterol)], were evaluated. The
data were analyzed by ANOVA of repeated measures or Friedman test according
to the data distribution. The level of significance was 5%. Results:
Fifty-eight individuals agreed to participate in the study, however, only 26
participants (21 women and 5 men) performed all 4 planned assessments. A
significant reduction was observed in all anthropometric parameters and AIP
in women and men (p<0.05). A significant correlation was found between the
AIP and all anthropometric parameters in both men and women, regardless of
the moments (p<0.05). The multiple linear regression age and sex adjusted
analysis between the AIP and anthropometric parameters at different times of
the study showed a significant association of AIP with all anthropometric
parameters (p<0.05) at T2, with the exception of the MM. Conclusion: During
the 1-year follow-up period of individuals undergoing CB, there was a
reduction in the AIP, suggesting a reduction in cardiovascular risk. In
addition to the concomitant reduction in anthropometric and biochemical
parameters of the lipid profile, BMI, WC and FM influenced the index in the
6th month after BS.
